On 11 September 2005, the youth of Mpumalanga South participated in the finals
of a speech contest at the Mayflower Congregation. The topic under discussion
was the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which poses a serious threat to our communities. This
contest was in line with the vision of the church to fight against this disease.
The speech contest was initially launched on 16 June (National Youth Day), when
the youth gathered at Elukwateni for a day of sport. Elimination rounds were
held and the best speakers were selected to represent their congregations at a
district level. The winners eventually participated in the finals, which
included 10 finalists from 8 districts, and who were judged according to various
criteria.
The results of the competition were as follows:
First Prize: Mkhize Siphumelele, who received a floating trophy and a R 500 gift
voucher from the Riverside Mall in Nelspruit.
Second Prize: Mnisi Kwanda, who received a R 300 gift voucher.
Third Prize: Mkhombo Sithembiso, who received a R 200 gift voucher.
