The atmosphere in the little congregation of Kokstad
was filled with excitement when they heard that Bishop Lawrence
Naidoo was scheduled to conduct the Divine service on 28 February
2010 in Kokstad. This excitement was further enhanced when the nod
was given to have this service in the nearby prison, Kokstad Medium
Correctional Centre.
Amidst tight security on the Sunday, the congregation
was directed to where the service was to be conducted. There was a
slight delay with correctional officers having to take care of the
operations of the prison, that is, unlocking and serving breakfast.
The service was attended by 122 prisoners, including
24 women, 3 toddlers, and 17 correctional officers. The District
Evangelist Martin Landsberg accompanied by eleven brothers served as
a male choir for the divine service.
The Bishop used the text from the Chief Apostle out
of Hebrews 12:14: “Strive for peace with everyone, and for holiness
without which no one will see the Lord.” The Bishop went further to
explain how one can maintain peace and how to achieve holiness. The
theme of peace struck many a cord, as the prisoners were reminded
that they needed the forgiveness of those whom they have hurt. The
fact that the word was well received was confirmed by offenders
nodding their heads throughout the service.
The well known hymns such as “What a friend we have
in Jesus” and “Amazing Grace” enabled the entire congregation to
join in the singing.
Many guests during the celebrating of Holy Communion
joined, in order to cement the theme of seeking peace.
After the divine service, the prison’s female choir
entertained the congregation with traditional African singing.
The head of the centre, Mr Patrick Marau, thanked the
Bishop and the Area Commissioner who is the rector in Kokstad for
thinking of the community of offenders who are also in need of the
Lord’s word. He also asked if the Bishop can arrange for more divine
services in the prison.
The entire congregation ended the service with
fellowship which was arranged by Kokstad congregation. It was Indeed
a day to remember.
