On 7-8 March 2009 a special reunion took place in
Standerton. All members who at some stage lived in Standerton were
invited to attend. During the weekend much fellowship was enjoyed, and
the history and pioneers of the area were also remembered.
Some 62 members arrived at 16h00 on Saturday, 7 March,
many embracing, happy to see one another again. One sister flew in from
Abu Dhabi, another family drove from East London, while others came from
various towns and cities closer by.
District Elder Danie Bezuidenhout - a previous
district leader - opened the festivities with a prayer. At 17h00
members enjoyed a supper consisting of a “Lamb Potjie” with “pap” or
“stampmielies” prepared by the family of brother Koos Nel. After
supper District Elder Peet Pienaar remembered the pioneers, while other
experiences were also shared with those in attendance.
The evening was closed when the choir members prepared
for the highlight of the weekend, the Sunday divine service with Apostle
Mwape.
Apostle Mwape served the 135 members with a word from
Isaiah 2:5: “O house of Jacob, come and let us walk in the light of the
Lord.” After service the members were treated with a lunch. They
also completed a register with comments before returning home.
In 1911 the young Brother J R Kreunen was sent from East
London to Pretoria to start the work of God in what was then known as
the Transvaal. In the late 1930’s or early 1940’s Brother Stephens was
sent from Pretoria to Standerton to bring testimony. He came by
train over weekends. In time the first services were conducted and
later members were adopted and sealed.
From humble beginnings in Standerton, the work of God
spread and today four districts exist in the area – Northern Natal,
Ermelo, Secunda and Standerton.
