Pipe Organ Donated to Polokwane
Central Congregation
(formerly known as Pietersburg Congregation)
In April 2005, a member (who wishes to remain anonymous) of the Polokwane
Central congregation received information that the Reformed Church (Hervormde
Kerk) of Rustenburg was selling their pipe organ. The organ, which was built by
TM Muller in Maryland (USA), was originally installed in 1946. An offer by the
member to purchase the organ was accepted. The offer included the cost to
dismantle and reassemble the organ in our Polokwane Central Church. It was
decided that the organ would stand behind the altar which necessitated the
building on of an extra room to accommodate all 322 pipes, the longest of which
is 4 metres. Assembly of the organ itself began at the end of June, and took
three weeks to complete. (The entire cost amounted to R 82 000.) At the same
time, the members of Polokwane Central, under the supervision of District Elder
Liddle, decided to give their church building an extensive renovation, and made
several contributions towards this project. The carpets were taken out and the
floor was tiled. Further renovations were made to the vestry, mother’s room, the
altar and benches. Outside a palisade enhanced the front of the building, while
new paving was laid as well.
