Official Opening of the Amazing
Grace Children's Home (Eikenhof)
Realising that there existed a growing need for homeless children, Grace Mashaba
registered the Amazing Grace Children's Home in Nelspruit (Mpumalanga) as a
non-profit organisation in 1998. To this day it serves as a home for many
children who come from various difficult socio-economic backgrounds. With time
the New Apostolic Church South East Africa district became involved when
District Apostle Kitching visited Grace, a New Apostolic herself, and her
children's home in 2003. After making various donations, it was also decided
that part of the church property at Eikenhof, located to the south of
Johannesburg, would be made available for use by the Amazing Grace Children's
group. The church made a further commitment to renovate the property in order
for it to accommodate approximately 100 children.
The renovations were planned in three phases. The first phase was completed in
January 2004 when about 20 children moved in. The entire renovation included the
upgrade of the main house, dormitories, ablution facilities, kitchen and the
lapa as a dining area, a clothing store, and counselling rooms. The renovations
were completed in November 2005. It was therefore a special day when on 22
November 2005 the Amazing Grace Children's Home in Eikenhof was officially
opened.
Various people representing several institutions were present at the opening
ceremony. Amongst others there were representatives of the Johannesburg Metro
council, the South African Police, the government of North-Rhine Westphalia
(Germany), a partner province of Mpumalanga, and Bernd Klippert of the “NAK-karitativ”,
the relief agency of the New Apostolic District Churches of Germany.
Apostle Dimba began the proceedings with a prayer and short address. Some of the
representatives then addressed the audience, as well as some of the previous
children of the home at Mpumalanga who now have graduated at a tertiary level.
Lastly, a visibly moved Grace Mashaba said a few words and thanked everybody for
making another children's home possible. Important themes throughout the
ceremony were the expression of a deep thankfulness to Grace Mashaba for her
wonderful work, thankfulness for the love and help of God, and our
responsibility to give adequate assistance to vulnerable children.
Currently there are about fifty children living at Eikenhof. Future plans are to
erect training centres to equip the children to gain employment when finishing
school.
