Extensive preparations were made in anticipation for the Bishop Petersen’s visit to the West Rand District on 8 March 2009.  On this day he conducted a Sunday School service at the Randfontein church, where he was heartily welcomed by the “Kidz 4 Christ”.  This is the term used for the Sunday School children of the district.

The “Kidz 4 Christ” concept was the innovation of the district based Sunday School leadership.  Each child received a red t-shirt and a cap boasting the “Kidz 4 Christ” name, creating an identity and sense of belonging for the children.  The project has proven very successful, since those children who could not attend so regularly were drawn in, eagerly wanting to form part of the Sunday School group.

The Randfontein church was decorated with flowers that were arranged by the Sunday School girls.  Banners and posters were also put up.  They reflected various themes assigned to the children of the respective congregations who attended.

Sisters Beverley Brandt and Charlene Swart also practiced with the children, ensuring that there was joyful singing during the service.  The service was based on 1 John 4:7:

“Dear friends, let us love one another,
for love comes from God.”

Bishop Petersen interacted with the children on the various themes and he also asked how they would like to contribute to the Lord’s work when they grow up.

Both the Bishop and the children had much fun during the exercise, especially with the children’s answers being delightful and straight from the heart. The Bishop gave the children a message using seven guidelines: “Dear little friend

1. Love one another
2. Be kind to one another
3. Speak only words of kindness
4. Complement each other
5. Be obedient
6. Pray for each other
7. Work for God”

The service was concluded with joyful singing and the children expressed their love for the Bishop by presenting him with two bouquets of flowers; one for himself and another for his wife. Everyone was treated to sweets and ice cream afterwards.
